The increase of technology has brought with it the ability for people to work in many places outside of the office. One place in particular that has become increasingly popular is the home. Being able to set up a home studio is something that many professionals need to either learn how to do or pay someone to do it. In this article, you will not only learn what you need in setting up your home studio, but also how to set it up.

The first thing you need to consider when setting up your home Magic Studios is the amount of bandwidth your Internet connection has at your residence. This is important because the amount of bandwidth you have will determine your ability to use Skype or other videoconferencing applications, as well as your ability to stream or broadcast if you need to.

You want to check with US Internet service provider for the highest Internet connection that you can get. 300 Mb per second down 60 to 65 Mb per second up is a good place to start. The reason for this is when you use your Internet connection throughout the day, there are times of referred to as peak times. Peak times are times when most people are using the Internet service.

Thus, the more people that use the Internet service at the same time, the less bandwidth you have for your usage. So making sure that you get the most bandwidth possible is important so that as people start-draining resources you have enough to use on your end.

The next thing you need is a decent computer. The computer that has at least a deal core processor, 4 to 6 GB’s of RAM, and at least a 500 GB hard drive, and a FireWire input, is a good computer to start with. If you do not yet have a computer and can afford to get a Mac Mini, this would save a lot of space and look cleaner in the end. However, a regular computer will do just fine. FireWire is better than USB when transferring video signals over the Internet. Connect your FireWire cable directly from your HD camera into your computer.

Next, make sure you have a hardwired Ethernet cable running from your router directly into your computer. Going wireless is preferred by many, but not as efficient when talking about using video conferencing services like Skype and or broadcasting.

The next thing you need is a good video camera. You can use a video camera that comes with your computer or a traditional web cam but, for better video quality, a standalone HD video camera is a better option. Most traditional web cameras have wide-angle views with no ability to adjust.

The ability to zoom in and out and get tight shots is what will make your videos look professional. Companies like Canon Panasonic and Sony all make good HD video camcorders. The Canon HD 30 is a good starting camcorder.

Eventually, you will want to graduate to a camera that has an HDMI out which will give you the best video quality. A Canon G 10 is a good camera with an HDMI out that allows you to go full 1080i resolution. If your computer does not have a HDMI input, you will need to get some sort of conversion.

A company called Black Magic Studios makes a device called the Intensity Extreme, which can convert the HDMI signal into USB or thunderbolt signal. So either connect the HDMI output from the video camera directly into your computer or, connect the HDMI into the Black Magic intensity extreme, and then connect the USB or thunderbolt connection out of the Black Magic into your computer.

Looking good is not the only concern, sounding good is also of equal importance. For this, you need to get a good microphone. Again, you can use a microphone that comes built into your computer but for better quality, sound standalone microphone is best. The Heil PR 40 is a great mic to use. However, you can use one of lower quality.

These mics typically come with an XLR connection that is not compatible with most computers. To get around this you will need a XLR to USB conversion cable. A company called Blue makes a product called the Icicle, which is an XLR to USB conversion cable. Connect your microphone into the XLR end of this cable and the USB and into your computer. Now you audio as well as video is all set up.

The next thing you want to consider is lighting in the room or area for which you working. So many people consider the camera but give little thought to the lighting in a room. There are many things to consider before setting up artificial lighting in a space such as, time of day, ambient lighting, sitting position, and size of the room. Some people like to have a big window behind them when they are on camera. This is a big mistake.

The intensity of the outside like will make you look like a silhouette instead of a real person. Having a big window off to the side can also introduce many problems as the light changes as the day goes on. The best thing to have is a sealed room in which you control the lighting, that way if video quality will remain constant each time.

Using diffused light as opposed to hard lighting is a much better option. Hard lighting is a lighting that comes from a naked light bulb. The problem with this is that hard lighting leaves hard shadows on the desired subject. Diffuse lighting softens or decreases the shadows created by hard lighting.

Now you have the basics of everything you need to create a studio in your own home. With this information, you can now be the envy of your friends, and in turn teach them how to do the same thing.
